I just this minute got reading through this article at theTyee. It's about Nathan Phelps, a son of Fred Phelps. I don't find much of what he says surprising, but I am surprised that it is coming from him. This apple seems to have fallen a long way from the tree.

yeah, but he is still living with the fallout

poor guy! at least he's trying to be a good person and not a crazed nut

I saw some of the comments, this being one:
"Religion is a crutch to people who are scared of life! That sort of people will accept a lot of BS and still believe/hope that somehow they will be shown the light and save themselves (from what?)"

How does this sound, I'll change one word:

Television is a crutch to people who are scared of life! That sort of people will accept a lot of BS and still believe/hope that somehow they will be shown the light and save themselves (from what?)

I'm not defending religion in this matter, this is quite obviously a very extreme case.

My point is that people need an opiate. The religious look up to Gods and Dieties for moral direction (albeit sometimes misguided). What guides the aetheist to a greater good?
gee, "aetheist" have access to logic, rational thinking and common sense. (and if they are smart they USE it) Doesn't everyone know that?

more people need to read some Asimov and Sagan

Actually no people dont know that. In survey's in the USA, even after 9/11, atheists are more feared than muslisms. It appears people in the USA only conceive that people will do good if they have a boss to placate.

I'm not sure.
Probably Fred Phelps isn't a bad man, but is seriously mentally ill and the community neglects that because of the freedom of religion.

(I know this is a dangerous thought, but that doesn't mean there is a truth in it)

The Westboro Baptist Church IS NOT a church, its a cult. Rev. Fred Phelps, Sr.'s "congregation" is comprised of 9 of his children and their spouses, their families, and dozens of grandchildren.

Read about another of one his 3 children who left the cult here

City held hostage (Topeka, KS) about Fred Phelps intimidation by litigation

Rev. Fred Phelps, Sr. and his children are lawyers who sue everyone and anyone who disagrees with them. Of Phelps' 13 children, all adults, at least 11 are lawyers, 9 are members of his cult. Phelps himself is a disbarred attorney who was long known for massive litigation; at one point, he personally had almost 200 lawsuits pending in federal court. Although his congregation includes only about 22 adults, at least 14 of those have law degrees. The church has its own law firm, Phelps Chartered, which is staffed by church members and which repeatedly files suits against its perceived enemies

Mental illness can alter your personality thoroughly.
IIRC there are more cases known that some ppl became pure evil after accidents or mental illnesses

I'd be more than happy to have that nut in a mental hospital where he could never again abuse children and grieving relatives at funerals
