Photoshopping before Photoshop

Yeah, but it can backfire.
Years ago my dad found a very small photo of his grandfather and asked if I could have it enlarged. I told him that a friend had a darkroom and necessary equipment and would do it myself. So I turned it into a 9x12 and dodged out some uglies at the bottom. After looking at the finished print I noticed that his right hand looked really strange so I made another copy and dodged in a thumb and finger, finished it up with a new frame and gave it to my dad.
One day about a month later my dad called me up and asked what I had done to the photo. He said that something didn't look right, and he had been looking at it for weeks trying to figure it out.
Turns out, his grandfather had lost his thumb and one finger to a saw blade.
