Poland arrests assassin.

Interesting development. I wonder if he'll actually have to face charges.

I would have expected any agent involved in that murder to have seeked refuge in Israel. It'll be interesting to see how this pans out.

That it was a German warrant is interesting considering the national guilt the Germans have been under concerning all things Jewish since the end of the last war.

It is true that the interests of the Jewish community are getting more attention in Germany than those of sometimes bigger minorities. However, polls have shown over and over again that a majority of Germans has a critical view of past and current Israeli activities in the Middle East.

Of course, the German political elite does not care much about what their voters think about the matter. They know that Israel imports twice as much from Germany as they export to the same country. (4 billion EUR vs. 2 billion EUR.) Israeli investments in Germany are even ten times higher than German investments in Israel. You might not expect it given their complicated relationship, but Germany is Israel's biggest European trade partner. In fact, in a bizarre twist of history German arms dealers have profited nicely from Israel's strong desire for military gadgets and its conflict-laden relations with certain neighbour countries. They will probably continue to do so for a long time to come.

@Jobbo:

That certainly gives an interesting bit of context and perspective to the situation.

Well, that the same everywhere of course. :) I just emailed my Prime Minister, haranguing him for being out of touch with the world. I hope it gives the person who has the job of reading his emails a chuckle. I don't expect it'll ever get further up the ladder then that.

That IS interesting. But didn't Germany just GIVE Israel a bunch of submarines within the last year or two? I suppose that the arms makers didn't give them away so I guess they got paid by the government but where did the government get the money from to do that?

I guess nobody in the "far-left" stands to profit from such a trade so that may be why Annette Groth and Inge Höger want to prosecture Israel for War Crimes.
