Still a high demand for their service plus there's a sweet new way to avoid paying taxes. Of course, profit for the prison company means loss for the tax payer who could get a cheaper service by running the prisons federally with a well paid union workforce. Money paid to workers is mostly spent in the workers' communities were it stimulates the economy. On the other hand, money paid to billionaire owners of giant corporations goes into derivatives and financial bubbles where it explodes throwing the economy into turmoil and increases the number of poor people - exactly the kind of thing that drives people to crime. Hmmm. That's actually pretty clever.

But even with all these available prisons, the real crooks are still free. Whyzzat?

Gotta love GEO's logo:

It's got the entire planet sealed off behind a thick ring wall. Nice touch.

I think the biggest problem here is that companies have too much influence on politics. If for example laws could change so that corporations could no longer contribute financially to political campaigns, private prisons might not be so bad as politicians would be forced to listen more to citizens rather then to corporations with much deeper pockets. Still, there's something about private prisons that would still bother me, as would a private police force or a judiciary. Citizens need to feel that matters such as law and order are there to serve them and to serve only them. A privately run prison will always have to serve profit as that's a necessity of all privately run organizations.

So ya, I see this is a huge problem and people should be concerned.
