So there's a war on Christmas, a war on drugs, a war on terror and a war on women (and on Christians and Muslims and Jews of course - goes without saying).
There is a big gulf between the rich and the poor but there are so few rich and they are so well entrenched you'd have to get everyone together on one side to rout them out.
But if you needed to keep people fighting each other and politics wasn't doing it already - or if you were an outside agent and wanted to stir the pot - what's a good fracture line? Well, there's one that always seems to come up in countries in turmoil. Perhaps a race war.
The racism in the US has always been bubbling along mostly below the surface. The melting pot is a myth and the US has never really managed (or perhaps even wanted) to integrate its people. The Trayvon story, in combination with the poor economy especially as it impacts minorities, has moved the instability up a notch or two. It could still just blow over - but if too many people start acting up and instigating - like the two black kids who set a white kid on fire mentioned in another thread here or stuff like this or this becomes the new "news" that the sides are reading then the distrust will only increase and the need to "avenge" will increase - that could start a death spiral.
Maybe in six months Russia or China will be sitting in the UN Security Council suggesting that one side or another should be sent weapons to help them against an oppressive government.
