Archbishop Dolan: More Sexual Abuse Among Teachers Than Priests

Archbishop Timothy Dolan defended comments he made on his blog that the rate of sexual abuse among New York City public school teachers is higher than that among priests.

In the post dated March 18, Dolan described an encounter with a man at a Denver airport who ripped into the Catholic Church for its history of sexual abuse.

Dolan, in the post, said he responded by telling the stranger that the "rate of sexual abuse among public school teachers is 10 times higher than that of priests."

When asked where the statistics Dolan cited were from, a spokeswoman for the New York Archdiocese cited a NYS Special Commissioner of Investigation report that substantiated 78 abuse cases by teachers in 2009, and 73 such cases last year.

Another 2009 study from John Jay on incidence of priest sexual abuse was also cited.
When asked to respond to the Archbishop's blog post, the Department of Education declined to comment, and the United Federation of Teachers did not respond to WNYC's request for comment.

The problem here is no one can validate the Priest's claim. The Catholic Church has refused to open their records to allow external audits of these events. I encourage the Catholic Church to list out the sexual relations of their 'celebit' priests, so we can ask the people if they were victimized or not.

Hardly a convincing defence of child abuse, is it?

Even if true, it smacks of, "Sure we rape children sometimes - perhaps even a lot of the time - but that's OK because there is another group of people who rape even more children than we do."

@Robert,
The age of consent in Rome is 13. NYC is likely 16-18 area.

that was my reaction.
haven't these idiots heard of 'two wrongs don't make a right' ????

Thanks Cecilia, I didn't take time to look up NY. Most of the US is 16-18.

I don't think that is the point. The point is priest commit no more abuse than the general public.

It's no wonder that, back in 2002—when the last Catholic sex-abuse scandal was making headlines—a Wall Street Journal-NBC News poll found that 64 percent of those queried thought Catholic priests "frequently'' abused children.

Yet experts say there's simply no data to support the claim at all.

There is no defense of child abuse and the rate among priests should be zero ideally. The point is that the pop culture idea that all priests are molesters which most of our sheep society accept is simply not true.

Every organisation that organises activities for children have a high risk of having to deal with child abuse. It happens. But the criminal part is the role of the organisation of the Catholic church.
Apparently the reputation of the church is more important than the well-being of children and respecting the law. Keeping it all hush-hush is literally obstructing the law and that is a criminal offense. As it happened not once, but as a rule, that fact makes the Catholic church in my eyes a criminal organisation.

Paid for by the catholic church.

As speel points out, the main issue was that they knew who was doing it, but rather than do something responsible like shop them, they hid them or even worse moved them around whenever things blew up. This was wilful and deliberate on their part and had been going on for decades. They earned that reputation due not only their inaction but by the actions they took that purpetuated it.

No one can be surprised by this, can they?
If they are suprised they're not paying attention.

Nothing like excepting that 'Group of Criminals A' isn't quite as bad as 'Group of Criminals B' because A said so. :banghead
