Did everyone hear about this?

Video report

First I heard it was a US diplomat who shot two guys on a motorbike, then they were armed guys then it turned out that a Colsulate vehicle that had been called to pick him up after the shooting had killed a pedestrian and then fled and then it turned out that the diplomat was CIA and the guys he shot were ISI.

Now this whole James Bond thing is becoming a bit of a damaging international incident and the Pakistanis are concerned that Ray was hanging with Al-Qaeda and offering nuclear and biological secrets.

Apparently Indian sources have said that Ray was working with Task Force 373, whatever that is and that the fear is that he is trying to get weapons of mass destruction into Al-Qaeda hands to justify a massive response from the US.

This article says that media outlets were originally instructed to say that Raymond was as diplomat even though it was already known that he was not a diplomat.

Exciting stuff.

"The White House says he is covered by diplomatic immunity and should be released right away?"

But apparently nothing about him shooting two people dead.

the fear is that he is trying to get weapons of mass destruction into Al-Qaeda hands to justify a massive response from the US.

As outlandish as that seems on the surface, nothing would surprise me anymore.

Hmm. It is indeed gone from here too. It's what is in my history, it's just not going anywhere now.

A more prosaic story would be that he is simply conducting a sting and that he will sell them some fake bomb or some such but why bother. It's not as if he'd be trying to develop a case against guys that he's going to bring to court. If these are really Al Qaeda surely they'd just send in the drones. Whatever he was up to it doesn't seem that he had the full trust if the ISI.

A Pakistani court has freed a US CIA contractor after acquitting him of two counts of murder...

So he didn't do it after all?

The acquittal came when relatives of the dead men pardoned him in court.

They confirmed to the judge overseeing the case that they had received compensation - known as "blood money".

Under Pakistani Sharia law, relatives of a murder victim can pardon the killer.

Reports say about 18 family members of the two dead men were in court on Wednesday and confirmed that they wanted Mr Davis to be freed and pardoned because they had received "blood money".

The Pakistani media has reported that the families received 200 million rupees ($2.34m, £1.1m) but US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton denied the US government had paid any blood money.

Protests against the acquittal took place in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad. In Lahore demonstrators clashed with riot police near the US consulate.

Six people were injured and several others were arrested after police baton-charged the crowd.

In other parts of Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad demonstrators set tyres on fire and disrupted traffic.

Oh.
