Religionists taking over the armed forces

But isn't this a great way to kill them off? Well, just kidding, but honestly, it seems like the type of job the easily brainwashed would naturally gravitate too.

In a way.. and I've thought of it in a not kidding way and what better way to do it than by religious wars - Christians on Muslims for a start - but to make it work properly you have to take the really cool weapons out of the hands of either side and take them to some desolate plane well away from civilians. The problem is that eventually one side will win and they will then have blood lust, ideology and idle time. Not a good combination.

Not in Iraq or Afghanistan nor in Pakistan (well, ok, they are)but also right here.

Buddy, the armed forces of the US have ALWAYS been run by religious devotees. Ask any Atheist or Agnostic who joins and is forced to go to church every Sunday. It was that way in 1984 when I got there, I'm sure it's the same, if not worse now.

Declared non-religious types generally don't make rank very fast, if at all.

I've read an increasing amount of news about this over the last few years. It seems that not only religious and non-religious service men (and women) are clashing but even Christians of different sects.

I don't have first hand experience with this. My Dad was in the Navy and Naval Reserve. What I do have experience with was his retirement party. What I remember is everyone that spoke invoked the bible and a prayer. It was creepy.

Somehow this isn't too surprising but it just seems that they are getting nuttier now. I'm not just talking about the regularly religious, but the fanatical zealot types that have been entrenching themselves in military power and political power. They seem to be more like Christian Zionists who believe that the Jews must occupy greater Israel again before Jesus can come back and throw all the Jews who don't convert to Christianity into the lake of fire. The Jewish Zionists believe exactly the same thing only without the Jesus and the fire.

Of course, the rich and influential Jews in the US (as opposed to the poor and powerless ones) are generally a shrewd bunch who appreciate that they are a minority and that pogroms have followed them around for centuries so a line has to be trod - plus they also appreciate that they have a lot to lose in prestige and wealth if the US should fall from over extending itself. Unfortunately the guys that are taking over all the scary weapons have a different perspective. It's hard to reason with a bunch of guys who think the world is ending soon anyway and dying doesn't matter.
