Remember when Disney did actual animation?

Well, turns out, they still can.
Paperman, a 6 minute freebee for your viewing pleasure.

Hmm... I believe it is still pure computer 3d modeled, just rendered through a 2d filter. Though its a good little story, and I do like the style.

I saw it before, but I'm having trouble placing where. Ah. Wikipedia to the rescue. It was on the lead-in to Wreck-it Ralph.

Cell shading ftw, coupled with, as you say some clever filtering. A bit of a cheat but well done. Have to be honest in saying much of Disney's recent offerings have been straight to video junk, I was very surprised they had this in them still.

Yup, Disney put it up on YouTube for a limited time in celebration.

There's a video up on YouTube somewhere talking about how they did this. The big deal seems to be that they developed a way of anchoring line drawings to the 3D models and tween them automatically to add more of that 2d hand drawn look.

I guess you've seen Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amelie Poulain?

Hmm, it appears I might have seen it after all - it was released in the UK as "Amelie". I seem to recall enjoying it a lot.

On a broader animation note however, after watching Paperman I was clicking on various cartoons on YouTube and spotted this: Sintal, by the blender foundation, which also ties in nicely with Glaucus's link to that anime studio software.

I always preferred the Fleischer bros. they invented roto-scoping
