Remember when this was the sort of thing that was only a problem in the USSR?

Happens all the time in SE Florida. It is a major concern, especially in my line of work. Anything that is not protected by armed guard will be stolen. Crooks are stealing copper backflow devices, copper wiring from pole lights, condenser coils and just about anything else of negligible value. In the park association of one of my buildings at least 2 backflow preventers have been stolen in the last couple months and one building had the copper wiring to pole lamps stolen twice. A friend's builing a few miles down the road had 7 ground level condenser units stolen. I've heard about even more, it is an epidemic. Back in 2009 I was looking at foreclosed houses in Fort Myers (SW Florida) and without fail every single one of these homes at least had the condenser coil stolen.

we have that sort of stuff going on up here too - but once the crooks start hitting the sub-stations? That will be a level of inconvenience people will have a tough time getting used to.

Bombing power stations is the sort of thing the US does when it's trying to bring "democracy" to a country - because it is so destructive to social cohesion they can then take advantage and put their own guys in power. Except now you don't have to bomb people - just raise the price of copper and let the scavengers do it for you.

Time to change back to soft iron conductors.

Don't worry, it's about to get far worse.

Sometimes theft benefits ya.... We recently bought a 2nd house about a mile away that was in foreclosure. We have a friend whose husband is a construction worker. They're fixing the house and paying us a small rent. The goal is to return it to saleable condition. If they have a job within 5 years they'll buy it. Else we'll sell it.

During the months of closing (BTW if banks want to get rid of stuff they shouldn't take 3 months for them to get their ducks in a row) someone broke in and stole all the copper. I did mention the house was in foreclosure and one of the items we did have to go through was the plumbing system. In this case the bank had to replace all the plumbing. So we actually came out slightly ahead.

The guys who did it were caught and are scheduled for trial later this year.
