On Tuesday evening, the Democrats in Rhode Island state House voted 53-18 to pass a bill that would allow workers to take paid time off to care for a new child or a sick or injured family member. 4 weeks is allowable in 2014, 6 weeks in 2015, and up to 8 weeks by 2016. It does cost a family to buy into the program, under $1 a week for the average family.

California and New Jersey are the only other two states that have programs similar paid family leave insurance.

.. Though since the Republicans are all pro-family I think they could do one better by removing the 'paid insurance' part and making this a mandatory part of our system. Strangely (ok not really) the Republicans in RI dislike this legislation. Something about hurting businesses and screw the family. Well they didn't say the last part they just left it out in hopes y'all too stupid to figure out that's what they mean.

Looks like another reason for Rhode Island business to get rid of permanent workers and use temps

The Expendables: How the Temps Who Power Corporate Giants Are Getting Crushed

The temp system insulates the host companies from workers’ compensation claims, unemployment taxes, union drives and the duty to ensure that their workers are citizens or legal immigrants.

Many economists predict the growth of temp work will continue beyond the recession, in part because of health-care reform, which some economists say will lead employers to hire temps to avoid the costs of covering full-time workers.

With the major provisions of health-care reform set to take effect in 2014, there’s growing evidence that 2013 is becoming a boom year for temping out. TempWorks, which sells software that keeps track of payroll and worker orders, says sales to staffing agencies have been going through the roof and that temp firms tell them the uptick is because of Obamacare.

Unintended consequences

unethical employers... morally bankrupt humans starting with the wage...consequences unintended are not necessary, not even for profit. more profit however is a different tale....
