Scott touts property tax cut bill at South Florida water district where job cuts anticipated
This may make most of you cross eyed with indifference, but the SFWMD (South Florida Water Management District) is about the most wasteful and crooked as you could imagine. It is fitting this was signed in Palm Beach County where I lived for one year, had ~$200 water bills on average and even had one $900 water bill which took forever to win a dispute.
The SFWMD is also known for the fact that they drain down Lake Okeechobee during times of heavy rain so they can claim a historic drought during times of below average rain (while raising rates of course, rates that always go up and not down).
The law, which Scott officially signed on May 26, gives lawmakers oversight of the state's five water management districts.
It also caps the amount of property taxes that the districts can collect. For the South Florida Water Management District, that means a 30 percent drop in property taxes it can collect in 2012.
Statewide the cuts will save homeowners and businesses $210.5 million and create a favorable tax and regulatory climate for businesses eyeing Florida, Scott said.
"The most important thing to creating jobs is lowering taxes," he said. "We've had great success in job creation."
