Well, it was only a matter of time...

But thanks to RIPA, a 19 year old is to spend the next 16 weeks in prison for refusing to hand over the password to his computer.

Thanks to slashdot for picking this up.
 
what happens if they can't get into his computer?

and what happens if they DO and don't find anything illegal? does he get to sue them?
 
This really does raise a lot of questions.

16 weeks in prison. Also, iirc double jeopardy laws were removed by the last government, so they can now effectively keep sending him back in indefinitely until he coughs up the password.

He has a dark smudge on his criminal record stating that he was charged and convicted for computer crimes. But thanks to the tone of this coverage, the combined efforts of the media and police will have been to effectively rendering him unemployable in the UK forever.

No, I'm not kidding on that last part.

First and formost for me is "where the hell is the European court of human rights in this?"

I guess they bought the crap cheney was selling where everyone has to lose their civil rights because we have to be scared of the bad guys :roll:
