Putin wants another Cold War. It gives him purpose and makes it easier for him to maintain his power. I guess murdering and imprisoning all your opponents isn't enough these days.

Putin wants another Cold War. It gives him purpose and makes it easier for him to maintain his power. I guess murdering and imprisoning all your opponents isn't enough these days.

Both sides want it. There was a panic (well, not among the public but among the ruling classes) when the Soviet Union fell. Who will be our enemy now? They been looking for quite a few years now and the best they've come up with is Bin Laden. The US has been beating itself against the sand of an enemy it can't possibly defeat. It needs to define itself by hammering against the anvil of an enemy it can't possibly fight.
