Also alarming to the National Rifle Association and many gun owners are legislative proposals that would require ammunition manufacturers to engrave a serial number on bullets and cartridge casings as a crime-fighting tool. Numbering ammunition would make it more expensive, many gun owners believe.

In Delray Beach, Delray Shooting Center manager Scott Bowen said some customers were buying rounds for AR-15s and AK-47s — semi-automatic weapons made to look like military arms — in large quantities.

"I've got guys buying whatever we got, hundreds at a time," Bowen said. "They're scared. We have an anti-gun president and an anti-gun Congress, and the rumor mill is going nuts."

This is no surprise. Obama's record on gun control speaks for itself and as my previous (recent) email on this topic pointed out, there is already one bill up for discussion.

On the positive side, I can definitely point to one business sector in the US that is taking in lots of money.

What the future really holds is anyone's guess. I freely admit that some of what is going on the current environment is hype but given the complete change in party control of the government...

That's the only thing I agree with. As for numbering ammunition, so what? You can already match bullets forensically, and after they hit a target, you couldn't read a number on the jacket anyway UNLESS it was at the base.

Adding a number to the base of each bullet head might cost every manufacturer about a million or so for equipment, which would certainly equal less than $.01 per jacket each creates, or $1.00 for a box of 100 .22 caliber shells, $.50 for boxes of most others.

Not to mention that there are literally billions of bullets in current circulation at stores, pawn shops, and so forth that haven't been purchased yet, so unless the US Government created a buyback program, it would be what.. 10 years or so before the first box of numbered shells hit the shelf?

Hell, I've got probably a dozen boxes of 9mm at the house of varying styles, and I shoot about twice a year.

This type of legislation does nothing to thwart crime other than try to force people to lock up their own bullets -- which they should do anyway -- to keep them from being stolen. I mean hell, what about people who do their own reloading, or jacket smelting? I know at least one guy who never needs to buy jackets or casings, so if he -- a great, legit guy -- does it as a hobby, how much you figure the criminals will worry about it?

As with the current panic over gun purchases, much ado about nothing, and much stupid panic by the sheeple about things that just don't matter.

Woo Whooo!!! I finally get to use your line... STRAW MAN!

Nice try but a *GREATLY OVERSIMPLIFIED* response... IMO.

Whether or not "scary black man take away guns" is involved, the historical data for the party currently in power (Democrats) points to more (active) gun control measures. I refer you to Johnson, Clinton and Carter as examples.

The current bill being considered for committee (see my previous topic) is further proof of Democrat efforts on gun control. I personally see Barack approving it, if it makes it to his desk, because his voting record points in that direction.... NOT because he is a "scary black man".

The public's reaction (with regards to gun buying) involves Barack but is not specifically because he is involved (reference above). That much should be obvious to you.

As for the NRA being "slack jawed reactionists"... yes, they certainly can be and have crossed the line in the past ("Jack Booted Thugs" comes to mind) but the simple fact is that without organizations like the NRA, most gun legislation would easily sail through committees and votes. On this point I applaud the NRA (and other gun lobby groups) for making noise. I'm sure Congress would love for them to disappear.

I've seen PETA in their "sheets" and frankly, I think it helps their "image". :D

Nice thoughts Wayne but you seem to be missing some data... one of the measures being considered mandates that all non-id'd ammo be turned in by 2011 or you suddenly become a felon. I have no idea how law enforcement tries to enforce that one but it is being proposed. So, you have to buy unique id ammo (one number per person) and can no longer re-load (although I suppose there might be some sort of mod to the proposed legislation to allow re-loaders to have a special number).

Yep, unique id ammo will solve all our woes..... NOT!

For now it is a state by state measure but there is talk about making a global bill at the Federal level.

California already requires such and Tennessee is proposing such (not that it will pass... thank God).
