Lowell farm in East Bethel, MN had about 10 horses in serverly malnurished conditions. My wife was involved in moving the horses to the University of Minnesota Equine program for treatment and hopeful reestablishment. They have to be there about 10 days and once they get a clean bill I suspect I'll end up with a couple of rescue horses.

One of the horses was a father to one of our horses. We never had the sire and at that time he was not at the Lowell farm. Very sad. And even more sad to have the owner argue that this is the normal condition of a horse.

We have situations like this popping up from time to time in Miami-Dade. We also have horses stolen, butchered and their carcass dropped off on the road somewhere. It seems some of the Puerto Rican and Cuban immigrants have a different view on what animal cruelty is. The worst one recently was an illegal farm and slaughterhouse operation. Video showed a guy walking into a pen with pigs with a hammer and the pigs all run and huddling in a corner aqueeling, obviously knowing what was coming. They select a pig and kill it with a hammer to the head in front of all the other pigs.
