A woman was beheaded in Saudi Arabia for practicing witchcraft and sorcery, the kingdom's Interior Ministry said, prompting Amnesty International to call for a halt in executions there.

Now, we can't go blaming them for every little beheading that happens over there. The Saudi royal family are our friends. They helped us overthrow the secular regime in Afghanistan and funnel support to the Mujaheddin and Taliban. They gave logistical assistance in overthrowing the secular regime in Iraq so that religious radicals could gain power and influence. They even helped funnel weapons and money to Al Qaeda and the Muslim Brotherhood to overthrow the largely secular regime in Libya.

I say we can. Although the House of Saud is no friend of the modern al-Qaeda, they are no saints themselves. They are not much better then the Taliban actually, but they are much richer. Although the West and Saudi Arabia share a common business interest and a common enemy, they should never be mistaken for friends.

Btw, describing Gaddafi's regime as nothing more then "secular" only does secularists a disservice. At any rate, what happened to Gaddafi will eventually happen to the Saudi Royal family as well. It's just a matter of time.

@Glaucus

I'm pretty sure he was being ironic ;-)

The Saudi regime will do whatever they can to stay in control and as long as they stay politically pally with the West, we'll help them :(

If they don't do as they are told, sure. But so long as they play ball they will get all the security they need.

Saudi's are fairly bad. Besides this behavior is nothing new. Christians as well have been tortured and killed. And the problem is it's our 'friendly' nation in the region so we turn a blind eye to towards this politically. If this was the Taliban or Saddam we'd be crying - go to war.

Dammy, I think we can fairly conclude that ultra-conservative if not conservative religion has a deterimental effect on societies and people. We have conservative Christian Terrorists killing people in the US, Africa and India. We have conservative Judism in the middle-east impacting equality and freedoms. And certainly we have conservative Islam governments that negatively impact the lives of citizens.

IMO the problem is those with faith willing to give control to organized religion. Look at the step backwards the Western world took once the Christian Church seized power, as one older example. And the step backwards the middle-east took when Islamic control became more the norm.

So we never had him killed.
-on the other hand, we also realised that we didn't need him, per se, and that the army would do just as well.
I think the US is waking up to the fact that playing ball isn't good enough. It's because of hard line dictators like Mubarak that many people in those countries blame US foreign policy and choose to take up arms against US citizens and interests. Islam in and of itself isn't a threat to the US, although it may be a threat to the people of those nations. Regardless, it's certainly in the best interests of the US to let people in those countries do whatever they want and it'll all work out fine because in the end, who ever owns the oil will sell the oil. The House of Saud is taking note of what is going on and is starting to make some reforms.

"the best interests of the US" depends on who the US is. Clue - It's not the people. In case you hadn't noticed, in the last decade the "US" has been treating its people more and more like those the US criticizes. Human Rights is merely a cudgel to beat other regimes with - it is a ruse that the US uses, not a general goal for the people of the world. Any regime that is not acting for the interests of the owners of the US can be attacked on "Human Rights", and the people will jump on board because it sounds righteous - it means we can bomb children and destroy hospitals and lock people up without charge and torture them, all for Human Rights.

There are regimes with atrocious Human Rights (look at how Israel treats the people in the land it is occupying for one egregious example) and the US will gladly turn a blind eye. There are little piss pot countries with cruel dictators that no-one gives a crap about but if there is one in a strategic location then either the local dictator has to get on side or else the US will notice he is violating Human Rights. That's the way it is. Selective enforcement.

And as to "who ever owns the oil will sell the oil", the point is that the US owns the oil. They decide how much can be sold and who it can be sold to. That is a huge pillar of their strategic and economic power. Free agents selling oil according to the market directly endanger that power.

having spent a year living among my fellow saudi humans i can say with regretful honesty i wouldnt care if the whole place got turned into a sheet of glass...
