Scottish Conservatives plan to split from the UK party

is this better for Scotland? will it make them more independent from the "Southerners" ?
what is being a "unionist" mean?

is this better for Scotland?

As far as Scotland at large is concerned, it's almost an irrelevance. The Conservatives have been getting slaughtered at the polls in Scotland for decades.
There is only one Conservative seat in Scotland, and it's been more or less that way for years.

will it make them more independent from the "Southerners" ?

No but it appears to be evidence that even some Tories are begining to face up to the reality that the UK Conservative party is roundly despised North of the border and has been ever since Thatcher came to power.

Scotland tends to be more socialist leaning than the rest of the UK, however it's possible that Scottish Conservative party might be able to pick up more votes by distancing themselves from their English counterparts, so it could turn out to be a good move for them.

Having said that, I'll be a little surprised if they actually go ahead with it.

what is being a "unionist" mean?

Depends on the context but in this instance it pertains to supporting Scotland remaining a part of the UK.

ah!, I had a feeling it Might mean something like that

can I assume that more and more people really don't care for this and want complete separation for the UK?

There has certainly been a trend in that direction for at least the last fifteen years.
I've always felt that way but more and more of my friends and acquaintances have come round to the same way of thinking, especially over the last five years.
I think a large chunk of the reason for that is that the SNP have been in power during that time and the country hasn't burnt to the ground yet, despite the hysterical predictions from the Murdoch press.

Whether it's enough of a trend to constitute a majority of Scottish voters is another question.
Personally I don't think so. Most opinion polls still show a majority wishing to remain part of the Union.

However there will be a referendum within the next four and a half years so we'll get the real answer then.

ah, the Murdoch press....well, I think we know how accurate THEY are

I guess it's only a matter of time before the Scots remove the albatross from around their ankle
