The young boy's badly charred body was found four days later stuffed in a culvert at the bottom of a ditch a few miles away from the duplex.

Nelson, a maintenance worker and former professional boxer, has pleaded not guilty and faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole.

Prosecutors said Nelson admitted to police that she dumped the boy's body in a ditch in the 9900 block of East Hardy.
Footage from surveillance cameras at a business nearby shows Nelson's silver pickup pull up at about 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve, a few hours after Jonathan disappeared, police said. The video shows Nelson taking the boy's body out of the truck bed and placing it in the ditch, they said.

Homicide investigator Mike Miller said investigators believe Nelson took the boy to her home, where she likely killed him and burned his body with a blowtorch.
Miller said that while a search of Nelson's home turned up an "incredible amount of evidence," investigators are still trying to determine a motive.

Houston Police Sgt. Brian Harris, who interrogated Nelson, testified that newly burned human remains have a unique smell.
"It's almost like a sweet, sweet mesquite smell," Harris said. The detective said he had smelled it at least eight times in more than 20 years of police work. "It's weird to say, but it almost makes your tongue tingle."

Investigators believe she used a cutting torch or other equipment from her work as a welder to burn the body. In addition to working as a welder, Nelson was also a part-time handyman at the apartment complex where the boy and his mother were living.

Sherry West testified during the two-week trial that she was walking home from the post office with 13-month-old Antonio Santiago in a stroller on the morning of March 21. She said a gunman demanding her purse shot her baby in the face after she told him she had no money.
Prosecutors said 18-year-old De'Marquise Elkins and an accomplice, 15-year-old Dominique Lang, are the ones who stopped West. Prosecutors say the older teen pointed a small .22-caliber revolver at West and demanded money. When West refused several times to turn over the money, Elkins fired a warning shot and then shot West in the leg and shot the baby between the eyes, prosecutors said.

Karimah Elkins was standing trial alongside her son on charges of evidence tampering and lying to police. Elkins' sister also was charged with evidence tampering.

Katrina Freeman said Saturday the shooter can't be her nephew, Elkins, because he showed up at her house Thursday at 8:15 a.m. - roughly an hour before the killing. She said she cooked eggs, grits and sausage for breakfast and that Elkins accompanied her and her children to run errands when they left at about 11:30 a.m. "He was with us the whole time," said Freeman, adding that she gave police the same account of her nephew's whereabouts. "There is no doubt in my mind that he is innocent."

Police say the 15-year-old Lang was an accomplice, and he is also charged with murder and will be tried at a later date. Lang said he ran into Elkins that morning, and the older teen asked if he’d ever robbed anyone. Lang said he told Elkins he hadn’t.
