Huge sink hole in Quebec swallowed a house and a family is missing. Hopefully they are missing because they left the house and got to safety.

The sink hole is about 1km by 1/2 km.

Horrible!!!

Quite. I see the story has been updated. The family have been found dead in their basement.

Well, I guess they have frequent events and slides there (according to the story) but this is one huge hole. Fortunately it a farming area so not too densely populated - but it must be unnerving for those who live around there.

Apparently it's a special type of clay soil which has a tendency to liquefy under certain conditions. Scary stuff.

This incident has reminded me of a professor of mine who I've lost contact with. He lived on the North Shore here in Vancouver and I guess he was in an area where they get slides but this was a big one. It happened at night and the hill just came down on their house. His wife died and he suffered some brain damage (they had him in an induced coma for quite a few weeks and nobody was even sure he'd survive). They had both been buried in their bed in thick mud.

Fortunately their only daughter was away at the time visiting friends.

But it just goes to show - crazy stuff happens. And I live near a fault zone that slips every 300 years or so with a magnitude 9-ish quake. Ah, but the climate is nice.

I don't care if that comment is considered tacky by some, I appreciate it!
