A little bit of snow here in Vancouver and all of a sudden it's raining branches. Good thing no-one was on the front walk at the time.uploadfromtaptalk1393284704031.jpg

Yikes!

Been raining here all winter. Hardly a drop of snow at all, although the ski resorts have plenty.

winter in NY (east coast in general, really) has been horrendous

the last few days we finally got some relief from the below freezing crap

That's an awesome satellite shot of Michigan. That's about what this winter has felt like, too. I'm right on the little tiny thread of still-liquid water that is the Detroit River.

Spring installation was successful for me, was 90 deg yesterday

Heh.... It's certainly not the first time it's happened. I distinctly remember driving there once back when I was in college, to have a snowball fight. :D Not much to the city, really. A couple bars (one of which apparently is converted into an ice cream shop, from the look of those pictures) and a gift shop where you can buy all sorts of trinkets "from Hell!"

Hey Ilwrath, good to see you back (or maybe you've been back and I just haven't noticed but good to see you anyway).

One of the coldest, but not the coldest, winter in the mid-west, Canada, and Russia were insufficient from stopping the establishing the 4th warmest Jan on record worldwide.

Nice try faethor, but all the talk about global climate will be thrown out the next time there's a cold spell in Texas.

.

is this a case of fowl play?
Ducks Dying From Starvation As Lake Michigan freezes over

the Bears and wolves will be well fed now

Hmm... I never thought about it, but I suppose the freezing of Lake St. Claire just north of me explains why I've seen more ducks than usual down my stretch of the Detroit river. There was a big flock of them floating down the channel by my house a couple days ago. I never realized ducks actually dive so deep for food. Apparently, Mallards commonly go 20-30 feet or more. Wikipedia told me this, because I wondered if they could dive and feed there. (Apparently, they can... It was about 25-30 feet of water I saw them in. But I don't commonly see them doing that. So I imagine the current isn't much to their liking, but I bet they like it better than solid ice.)

Hey Ilwrath, good to see you back (or maybe you've been back and I just haven't noticed but good to see you anyway).

Thanks! I never really went anywhere, per-se. Just been busy with a hectic winter and work schedule. :D

Also the power plant warm water discharges are popular places for wildlife ;)

Eagles spending winter at Mich. power plant warm water discharge

There were some baby Bald Eagles hatched on the Fermi II plant grounds a few years ago... I want to say people were nervous that a Bald Eagle was trying to build a nest on one of the actual power structures, but I can't find a link to it, anymore. The Fermi II and Monroe plants are a pretty good refuge area, as they're on the mouth of Lake Erie, and far enough south of the city that there's some open lands and hunting areas nearby.

In other news, we haven't had this much snow since 1,880, and are trying to break that mark!

Power plant warm water discharge are best spots for winter fishing

the thermal difference of the warm water discharge causes a chain of events that mimics an environment similar to that found in late spring or early summer.Warm water accelerates the growth of microscopic marine animals and organisms. These tiny creatures attract hordes of small minnows and other forage species, which in turn attract larger predator fish

and birds that prey on fish
