So my girlfriend's mom bought a condo in Phoenix Arizona (at bargain basement, or should I say, at a bank repo price) just for fun so we're thinking maybe check it out. I know pretty much nothing about the place except that it's always hot and sunny and full of cheap housing. That and it's pretty flat and it's no where near any serious body of water. Looking on google I see the Grand Canyon isn't too far, and Las Angeles is about 6 hours West. So what's to do in Phoenix? Shoot lizards? Anyone one been there? What's it like?

many years ago i was in Phoenix for a science fiction convention. it was over 100 degrees F during the day.

I recall washing my hair (which was quite long at the time). It was in the middle of the night and without making any attempts to dry it I walked outside to do god knows what. my hair was dry in moments. I kid you not.

THAT is how dry it is out there. Be prepared. you may get dehydrated in minutes.

aside from that (and how incredibly HOT is can get), it's a nice place. bring sun block.

Thanks cecilia. Although I never thought of it being that dry, it totally makes sense.

Btw, talk about good timing! Police: Couple stole thousands of bags from Phoenix airport

PHOENIX – Two people have been arrested for allegedly stealing thousands of baggage items from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

According to a Phoenix Police report, an investigation was launched after thousands of bags were reportedly stolen from the airport last month.

Sergeant Tommy Thompson with the Phoenix Police Department said detectives arrived at a home near 175th and Orangewood avenues in Waddell on Monday to investigate the theft.

Police served a search warrant on the house and reportedly at least a thousand bags inside overnight.

Wow!

I always take carry on luggage.

even tho people think it's some EVIL plan to invade privacy placing RDIF tags on luggage might prevent them from easily being stolen in places like an airport.

The beauty of Phoenix is not so much Phoenix itself. Sure, it's 108 degrees and dry, but really that feels like about 80 in Alabama, so it's fine. You'll just learn how to hydrate and wear sunblock..

My dad's family is from out there and the best things to do are to grab your camera and make days of it in places nearby like Prescott, Scottsdale, Sedona, Flagstaff and so-forth. 30 years ago, those were like separate towns. Now they're all pretty much downtown Phoenix. :)

BEAUTIFUL scenery though, if you're into stopping to smell the roses and that sort of thing. Plus, within a couple of hours, I vaguely recall it being the heart of Indian casino territory if that's your thing.

As for me, haven't been there since 78, but aside from being overrun by Mexicans, I can't imagine much has changed outside of natural city sprawl.
