Soundtrack to history: 1878 Edison audio unveiled

yeah, my brother was asked to get the sound off several of Edison's wax cylinders years ago. I believe one of them had Sullivan (of Gilbert and Sullivan fame) was saying what a wonderful device this was and that he predicted a whole shitload of crap would be recorded. (I'm paraphrasing, of course)
man, was he right!

Haber and his team used optical scanning technology to replicate the action of the phonograph's stylus, reading the grooves in the foil and creating a 3D image, which was then analyzed by a computer program that recovered the original recorded sound.

Yeah, that is really cool stuff. To finally be able to play back something that old without damaging it is quite impressive.

My dad's got one of the Edison GEM wax cylinder players, and a bunch of records of early songs. It's almost jarring to hear something from that long ago.
