Five members of the University of Southern Mississippi pep band have had their scholarships revoked and have been removed from the band after they yelled a derogatory chant at a Puerto Rican player during an NCAA basketball tournament game last week.

I agree with you; goose-gander, etc.
If the school has racial abuse rules and you're kids are being racially abused, don't let it go.
Report it and, if they refuse to act, go above their heads.
 
I think that Southern Miss went a little overboard on the punishment by stripping these students of their band scholarships for some stupid trash talk. Now it is pretty silly that they didn't know that Puerto Rico is part of the US Commonwealth, they do need lessons in Civics to learn that someone from Puerto Rico is a US citizen. Chanting about a green card isn't really a 'racial' slur.
