I got a good hearty chuckle about the idea that the problem was "leftists" and we'd all be a lot better off if we weren't slinging left/right words around as if they were an adequate explanation but whatever. What we have here is a climate of fear and a hair trigger system. That wasn't built by "leftists", it was built by authoritarians and PR companies and money. The guy going to jail and the person who turned him in and the system that drags him though the wringer are all powered by the same fear - the fear that bad people are going to kill our families. The bars of the cage they keep you in are made of fear.

Pretty much. People are scared and why shouldn't they be? And the hair trigger is probably necessary as well. If you want the right to own guns then you'll have to expect a highly reactionary system like this.

Anyway, he's been released now.

Well, it was under the Obama administration that DHS sent out those memos encouraging people to turn in anyone they have the slightest concern about. You remember, coffee shops were told to call if someone wanted to pay cash for coffee or if someone had a bumper sticker that mentioned the Constitution.

IMO many conservatives understand the left/right paradigm is complete bullshit, but most of the left refuse to see this and demonize those conservatives as wackos. The left is almost compltely sleepwalking, where the right has a handful that can see.

So definitely not leftist then.

Hello Pot, have you met Kettle?

The right is almost completely sleepwalking too, but in my experience the left are less asleep.
If you do recall whence came the left and right in political jargon it began in the French National Assembly when the supporters of the King went over to the right side of the house (with respect to the President's chair) and the supporters of the Revolution moved to the left. The right sided with the old power elite and the left with wresting power from them. In principle it has remained the same with the USA being at one time extremely left having won their own Revolution.

If you are for the common people you line up on the left. If you are for the powerful, for the nobility and for the priesthood then line up on the right. Anyone who lines up behind Obama and his Gitmo keeping, drone bombing, war mongering, whistleblower arresting, social security strangling policies is no lefty, just someone who's more scared of the alternative.

Different program and besides, you are barking up the wrong tree. You weren't around here during the Bush Administration, so you have no idea of what positions I took back then. Right after 911 with emotions raw and all, I called the Patriot Act a POS. I was one of the very few right out the gate. Don't believe me, ask anyone here. For the record, even as a registered Republican I never voted for GW Bush. I did defend him on certain positions prior to ~06, but that was about it.
