Hi everyone!

Autism is a life-long condition. Although autistic individuals can learn and develop, their autism will always be with them. Every day, everywhere. Yet it is a hidden condition which is often misunderstood.


I want to show the world my passion for autism and autistic people by having a jigsaw puzzle piece tattooed onto my body. Whenever somebody asks me what it means, I will explain that it represents the enigma and permanence of autism. My hope is that this will inspire others to learn more about the fascinating world of autism.

Tattoo ink has thimerosol, aka mercury, as a preservative. Infant vaccines do not. So I see this as a most excellent thumb your nose to the anti-vaccers.
 
tattoos are permanent.. causes are not.... i dont actually like all of my tats... i urge you to reconsider.....
 
at least one of his tattoos is way cool :D

Autism is more than just a fleeting interest. It is, and always will be, part of my life. Thank you for your advice, but my mind is made up :)

the puzzle design represents autism.

and we are talking about a tattoo design that moto wanted many years ago. He sent me a picture of this guys arm and I had to rework it so it was "flat" and therefore workable by a tattoo artist. And yet still would look good once it became 3D again on moto's arm...if you get my meaning.

anyway, it was quite an interesting task. Good times :D

Perhaps I'm daft, but I still don't get the autism - jigsaw puzzle piece connection.

Ah. I see you are puzzled. Perhaps if you saw someone with such a tat or you knew someone with such a tat you might, hypothetically speaking, approach them and ask a question along the lines of "What's with the puzzle piece tat?"

What would happen next?

Well, they'll probably tell me it's about autism awareness. My question is, why was the puzzle piece chosen as a symbol? Why not a turnip? Ok, maybe vegetables are an obvious bad idea, but you get my point. Well, I did some googling and the best answer I came up with is that it looks totally different from any other symbol. Ok. I just thought there was something more profound than that, like maybe, autistic people are super proficient at solving puzzles or something but I guess not.
 
as I understand it the puzzle piece signifies the mysterious nature of autism - as in children with this situation don't 'fit in' with others.

plus, it now has grown into more people becoming aware of autism by 'joining' their pieces.

I think...........
 
Cecilia has mostly got it :) It can be hard for people with autism to fit in, but if you look hard enough there is always a way. Sometimes it's about turning things around and around until you find the right way to make the pieces fit together.

In the online autism community, the jigsaw puzzle piece is recognised as a symbol for autism. And as Fluffy said, anyone who asks about the tattoo will get a full explanation :)
