I find the last month of 'news' an interesting display of the quality of news in the USA.

We see Fox News Producers working to rally ~20K TeaBaggers in DC. Then we see more than a day of 'news' of a balloon discussing the boy in the basket. A simple look at the balloon showed no weight in the basket. Else it'd be a ellipse shape with the bottom most towards the earth. If the scientists were worth their weight they'd be able to calculate the height of the flight laden and unladen. Again telling them there is no boy.

More importantly is often what is not covered. About a week before the balloon 'news' was another rally on DC. This time not driven by Fox Producers but themselves. Roughly 80K people turned out to rally for equal rights for GLBT individuals. People like to cry out the 'liberal' mainstream media. Yet if truly 'liberal' they did a horseshit job of covering the liberal issue of equal rights for all individuals within our society.

This is a good example of the sad state of journalism in the USA. The adage goes if it bleeds it leads. Oh so true, sell the senationalism, leave the topics that are difficult to soundbite on the floor.

The adage is perhaps a little out of date - if it was ever true.

If it serves "our" interests - it leads.

I see that the balloon story is still tops on CNN. Meanwhile the very bleedy suicide bombing in Iran is harder to find. Aren't we all supposed to be watching Iran's every move? A bomb that takes out several high level officers of the Revolutionary Guard would seem like a big deal - but it isn't something that attention should be drawn to. Why? Perhaps the fact that Congress voted in 2007 to spend 400 million bucks on covert operations against Iran including funding some pretty unsavoury characters has relevance?

To be fair, CNN caters to a US market, which honestly just doesn't care about the rest of the planet. However, if you click on the World tab on the top left under the CNN.com logo you'll be taken to a page where the main headline is: Iran mourns dozens killed in attack, along with a photo more gruesome then you'd normally expect on CNN:
