Sugar: The Bitter Truth

Care to capsulize for those who don't have 1.5 hours free?

Aye, a wee synopsis wouldn't go amiss.

There is a lot to this so one paragraph really doesn't do the trick, but I will try:)

Essentially he explains that fructose in any form such as sugar, HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) etc are WORSE for your body than alcohol. Fructose is a posion. When it occurs in nature in things such as fruit, it is the poison bundled with the cure (fiber etc). He contends that HFCS itself is no worse than regular sugar, but it is cheaper so it is used in higher volume in products and put in products you would not expect. He also explains the addictive properties of fructose and how it fools the body into not feeling full, thus you eat much more. He touches on the concept that fast food, food producers etc knowingly add it in the same way as cigarette makers added substances to make cigarettes more addictive to use more product. He draws on real studies and real science and shows time lines of when certain products were introduced and what happened to average weights. What I really like is he shows how the FDA pushing a low-fat diet has been an absolute disaster in the truest sense.

There is not much in this I have not heard before, but it is packaged really well and I thought it was an easy watch. IMO it is worth the 1.5 hours. The only thing I disagree on with him is the idea that HFCS is no worse than regular cane sugar. Otherwise I think he is spot on.

-Edit-
There is a little humor too. He mentioned that there was a "Texas Sized" Big Gulp that was 60 ounces of soda and came with a bag of chips and a candy bar for $0.99! That's funny! Sad but funny!

About 5 or so years ago I recall there was a move in the UN to reduce the amount of sugar allowed in pre packaged fast food (microwave meals, etc). It was blocked by those countries whose exports included sugar.

But yeah, highly processed sugars such as corn syrup aren't that great for you in large doses, and a lot of "low fat" prepack stuff pile in the sugar to make up for the lack of fat as a means to leave their products edible.

@Red, wait, big gulps actually exist, I mean outside of movies?

@The_Leander -- You will not find 7-11s in Minnesota. They left the midwest market back in the 80s. We're dominated by SuperAmerica and the occasional Kum&Go.

when I see ads (in the US, obviously) that state fructose corn syrup is just fine and dandy, yippie ky-ah, that pisses me off.
reading ingredients I have found fructose corn syrup in vanilla extract, yogurt, peanut butter and a ton of other shit.

I mean, DAMN! I don't want that garbage in what is SUPPOSED to be real food.
if one ingested fructose corn syrup every once in a while that would be "ok", but when it's found in nearly every god damn thing you eat, THAT is rediculous!

That's funny, we still have them here. Macs stores are their only real competition, aside from all the gas stations. But I haven't had a big gulp since I was a kid. In fact, a full can of coke is too much for me, I get sick of the sugar taste pretty quickly. I don't really drink pop any more. And I always thought slurpees were kinda dumb.

Oh Glaucus -- I recently decided that sugary dislikes are a sign of old age. At least that's my excuse.
