Target Toronto

What Could Have Happened In Toronto

Hilarious! Here's a bomb we build that they COULD have built. See how scary it is? Let's pass some laws against Muslims.

This sort of hypothetical theatre is all psychological gamesmanship. But do people looking at that explosion feel a cold chill or do they just think it's as cool as the MOAB? "Our" governments have dropped bigger ordinance than this on innocent civilians so can it really be so wrong?

Instead of proving how big a bomb they could have made if they had made a bomb, how about proving that they would have made this bomb if the RCMP had never agreed to string them along. Would they even have done anything? Since they were under surveillance couldn't they have just let them buy the materials on their own and construct a bomb? Then you could charge the guys that supplied the stuff too. Oh but maybe they'd have never got that far on their own or the supplier would have turned them in.

No, that's not how I see it. Although there were some stupid comments made by Americans when these guys were first arrested, the Canadian government has openly dismissed charges that Canada is full of al-Qaeda sympathizers. In fact, the RCMP went out of they're way to deflect any fingers pointed at muslims when one officer foolishly said it was "difficult to find a common denominator". If anything, the most interesting part of this whole story is that the terror cell was infiltrated by a Canadian Muslim. This shows that Canadian Muslims see themselves as Canadians and that Canadian law enforcement trusts Muslim Canadians. Seems to me as the complete opposite of what you said.

As for the video itself, what you saw wasn't specifically designed for propaganda, it was designed for a trial that was made public only because the Globe and Mail applied for the material to be released. These guys are on trial for conspiracy, a charge that's always tough to prove at the best of times. Showing that they had both the intent and capability is very important. The bomb detonation we saw used the terrorists planned formula, which called for 1 metric tonne of ammonium-nitrate even though they "purchased" 3 metric tonnes of it - if they wanted to sensationalize it they would have used all 3 in one big massive blast. And if they really wanted to pass laws against Muslims in general wouldn't they get Little Mosque on the Prairie pulled off the air first? No one wants to see those lovable Muslims being carted away.

What exactly do you mean by your last sentence here?

I can't really agree with this. Conspiring to commit mass murder is itself a crime. Once they set a plan and start buying materials to execute the plan they crossed a line. Even if they later were to change their mind and decide against it, they'd still be guilty in my books and deserve the full penalty of the law. They may be upset with what's going on in Afghanistan, but planning to kill innocent civilians isn't going to fix this. If they instead organized a peaceful protest that would have done much more for their cause. Now they can rot in jail.

Come now Fluffy, you don't really think they should have waited until a few thousand people were killed, do you?
