As to the debt, that debt was already there - it's just been nationalized. That debt was built up privately and had to be backed up by someone when it started to take down the economy. As I've said before, when the debt was nationalized, the assets of the companies that created the debts should have been nationalized at the same time. Instead he let the robber barons keep their ill gotten gains and even bonus themselves more out of the public purse. Doing it the way he should have done it, though, was considered politically untenable.

As to how to save money now? Well, if the military budget was cut in half the total federal spending would fall by a quarter, more than enough to cover single payer medicare which itself would save the US about half the money it spends on healthcare. Then, also, tightening up on outrageous patents would help the economy too and allowing the import of medicines would be a further saving. Of course, freeing the markets in that way is considered bad. The big companies don't like free markets, only markets that they own.
