Tennessee gun law divides opinion

Following a recent series of high-profile shooting incidents in the United States, the southern state of Tennessee is changing its gun laws this week.

It is relaxing them.

If a last-minute legal challenge fails, from Tuesday, gun owners in the state will be allowed to carry their weapons in a lot more public places - including bars and restaurants.

They should install live web cams in those bars as well. What could be more fun then watching a bunch of drunk red necks shooting each other?

OK.. I'll take the bait... sure, that is one way to look at the situation... someone who isn't from there.

There has long been the arguement that more guns in registered hands may diminish crime. I personally have no issue with carrying legal firearms into public areas that legally permit it. I've carried into resturaunts and shopping malls without issue more times than I can remember. I've also encountered stores that clearly posted no guns allowed. I'm fine with that as well since it helped me find new stores to shop in.

I don't think you intended to but you forgot to mention that the BBC article you link to does mention that bar owners can post "no guns allowed" signs and that registered owners who carry are not allowed to buy alcohol. Should someone break either of those rules and use a gun in a crime, they will be put away (term varying by state).

Just so you know, guns in bars are apparently not unique to TN. Can we install those webcams in Pittsburgh as well?

In any event, my permit is legal in TN so it looks like I may go up there a bit more often.
