Despite overwhelming support from the public for HB 1937, a bill to protect the Fourth Amendment rights of Texas citizens, the federal Department of Justice (DOJ) succeeded in intimidating the Texas Senate into submission with a threatening letter full of misleading statements.

State Senator Dan Patrick withdrew the bill from the floor blaming Lt. Governor David Dewhurst saying, “This was a case of the lieutenant governor getting bullied by the federal government.” However, after having watched this, I ask Patrick, why didn’t he at least let the Senate vote on the bill? Why claim it "dead?" Even more infuriating is that our own State Senator Kirk Watson had lined up 12 senators against this bill because he feared the TSA.

Since when did the proud State of Texas become such a chump? Since when did we run with our panties in a bunch at the threat of trouble? Big bad TSA threatens to shut down every airport in Texas, we surrender? Think about it. What would happen if the Federal Government even thought to follow through on this threat? We are Texas, for God’s sake. There would be mass upheaval and picketing from all over. Chuck Norris, himself, would cause Armageddon over this issue! This would NEVER last. Why are we running with our tails tucked between our legs? If someone threatens Texas, I say, “Bring it.”

I heard about this back-down earlier today and I have to say my initial reaction was similar - where's the rough and tough Texas of legend. Sounds like the manly men of yore have retired to nibble dainty biscuits as they lounge about in lingerie.

Then again, maybe a "diplomatic" message was relayed to someone along the lines of "if you guys let planes fly without the TSA, within two weeks a bomb will take down a plane coming from Texas - now do any of you guys want that on your conscience?"
