You Don’t Have the Right to Remain Silent

On Monday, in a case called Salinas v. Texas that hasn’t gotten the attention it deserves, the Supreme Court held that you remain silent at your peril. The court said that this is true even before you’re arrested, when the police are just informally asking questions. The court’s move to cut off the right to remain silent is wrong and also dangerous—because it encourages the kind of high-pressure questioning that can elicit false confessions.

This should be getting more coverage that it seems to be. Far worse than the NSA leak if you ask me.

EDIT: And yes, the thread title should say "Supreme" instead of "Suprene".

rlb already mentioned that in with the thread called ... something like "another one down the crapper". Probably not the most descriptive thread title - not that I can criticize looking back at some of mine...

And, yes, its a bit bad. Don't talk before you're mirandized? Then you are guilty. Don't see how that could be abused

"Richards, MP for Wild Rose, Alta., said the bill is meant to give police an added tool to prevent lawful protests from becoming violent riots"

Bull. The police can turn any peaceful protest into a riot whenever they want, and that would just mean that all the peaceful protesters who don't want to be identified will suddenly become felons and the state will be able to put them away for 10 years. Whoopee.

OK, someone's getting an email - possibly a letter.

In Minnesota I believe Minneapolis is the only city in the State that outlaws ski-masks inside of banks. It's cold here man! We're north of Toronto!

I think masks in public should always be illegal. Except for Halloween. And we had this discussion before.

I wonder if a burqa or veil counts as a mask. I think I'm getting an idea.
