The Greeks do a Good Thing

And as a result Turkish planes and ships have been provoking reactions from the Greek airforce and navy by violating our air space and waters: Turkish frigate escalates tension. Most Greeks would find it impossible to believe that the recent actions by Turkey (a staunch ally of both the US and Israel) were not sanctioned (if not conceived by) the US. Americans wonder why Greeks burn US flags; this is why. This may also explain why Greece is looking more towards Russia for security - which is unfortunate as I think Greece is more naturally allied with the West and I feel that Russia is far worse then the US.

The tragic truth for Greece is that they are really allied with no one as they are isolated between East and West (just like they were in the good old ancient times). Yes they are part of NATO and the EU, but outcasts as well.

Hi there, Devil's advocate here.

@Fulffy
So according to that article the Greeks have weak knees? They only did it because they feared protest?

@Mike
Your article doesn't make the same assertions you post in this thread. It appears to me there has been long standing Greece/Turkey issues and Turkey simply took advantage of the US snub.

@Robert
Maybe you should riot a little, seems to have worked in Greece :wink:

Red, you're right that there have always been tensions there. And there may have been other reasons for the US to sanction prior Turkish provocations: Russia exercise with Greece sets precedent. But in the vocabulary of realpolitik these overflights are not part of some mindless game, they're a serious signal from one to another, and the message is simple: stay in line or you may face consequences. I find it interesting that Turkey is willing to damage it's own EU membership bid over this, wonder what it's loyalty reward will be.

It depends on who you think "the Greeks" are. If you think "the Greeks" are the few people that constitute the government of Greece, then perhaps - unless they are merely using the the threat of unrest as an excuse to do what they already intend to do, in which case, no.

If you mean by "the Greeks" the rest of the people who live in Greece, and if their government truly does fear them, then no.

Israel intercepts Greek vessel

A Greek vessel on a second attempt to deliver medical supplies to injured Palestinians in Gaza was intercepted by Israeli warships some 160 kilometers from its intended destination. Members of the initiative, including 12 Greek doctors and several Euro MPs, condemned the intervention. Theodoros Dritsas, a left-wing deputy, referred to “an unacceptable act of piracy.” According to Karin Pally, the initiative’s coordinator, the vessel was surrounded by Israeli vessels while in international waters.

You know that Iran has sent a humanitarian aid ship to Gaza as well.

This is some brinkmanship, especially while Israel would love to get its war on with Iran. Iran are probably hoping that Israel will fire on them so they can make a big issue of it in the UN. He's probably also trying to curry favour with the Arabs and show that Persians are their friends. It may also be intended to embarrass the US owned dictators of Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

@Fluffy

US owned dictators in Saudi Arabia? Would that be the same US owned dictators that GW Bush went to begging for cheaper oil and got laughed at :?:

Thems would be the ones. Far better than who the people would vote for if given the choice. (Well, far better for "western interests").
