Of course I was not stupid enough to go watch the movie, but that was before I read that he is not even "A Real American Hero(tm)". I was reading a sports blog and saw a comment. Do a little Googling and yep, that is the case! I guess I have been living under a rock. Here is a Glen Beck bit from 2007 on the subject.

http://mediamatters.org/research/200710310008

Glenn Beck denounced the forthcoming Paramount Pictures movie G.I. Joe, claiming that the character G.I. Joe -- based on the popular toy from Hasbro -- "has now been discharged from the American military, and Hollywood now has him answering to some bullcrap international force like the U.N. We all know that the U.N. is a toothless bunch of pansies. They don't deserve somebody like Joe, even the little plastic version." He later asserted: "I believe some are trying to indoctrinate our kids into hating their own country, turning us into some one-world-government nightmare; hating America, turning it into a dirty word."
Unbelievable  At least Fluffy will agree, he'll see the New World Order aspect of globalization indoctrination.

Any gun wearing soldier is a pussy. Real soldiers are huge sword wielding medieval knights. :P

That's rather old news. Did it take FOX that long to get that scoup?

And really Red, you should just be happy they didn't make him gay. No offense Speel. :-)

And why do Americans hate the rest of the world?

None taken.
Btw. considering this, gay is very relative, by the power of grayskull!

No, look at the date on the fox page, *I* took that long to get the scoup because I avoid obovious crappy movies. I just didn't know how crappy crap could be!

The question should be why does hollywood and the liberal left think Americans should hate themselves? G.I. Joes has been american icon for well over half a century with a tagline of "Real American Hero". Why does Hollywood think that must be changed? And changed for the UN? WTF has the UN ever done except line their own pockets?

@Jim:

So you're outraged because some details of a fictional character, portrayed in a fictional movie, that you yourself have described as crap and will not even watch, are not exactly same as they previously were?

If it's any consolation, Hollywood has been aportioning credit for achievements of other countries to the USA for as long as I can remember - for example the "Enigma" movie, U-571.

Thanks for bringing that up Robert! That film, while entertaining, is a "pet peeve" of mine for its flagrent abuse of history. The Enigma cypher (a fascinating device) had been exploited as early as 1932 by the Poles who then shifted their efforts to France and Britain in 1939.

The RN should have received full credit (during the film, not just the credits at the end) for the first capture of a naval Enigma in 1941 when HMS Bulldog (IIRC) attacked and subsequently captured U110. During their boarding and inspection of the boat, they captured all key and cypher related material which made the work at Bletchley Park much more accurate, not to mention easier (Kriegsmarine Enigmas had more rotors than Luftwaffe or Heeres Enigmas).

What that film could have (and IMO should have) covered was the historical capture of U505 by the USN in 1944. If you are not aware of this mission, the USN wanted specifically to capture (intact) a uboat for inspection and of course, valuable intel materials. As an aside, the U505 is viewable by the public (inside and out) today at the Chicago museum of science and industry (look it up on the web).

By the way, U-Boats are a hobby of mine.

History is whatever the guys with influence say it is. If that's what people remember and believe then that is what happened - it's part of the myth building of national/group identity. There is a sizable percentage of the population of the planet that believe it is historical truth that a fellow named Jesus was born of a virgin, walked on water, raised the dead, turned water into wine, was crucified, died, rose from the dead, and ascended bodily into heaven. It is largely due to that history taught diligently and enthusiastically by the church of the Roman Empire that gives the Vatican it's considerable political power and not insubstantial income to this day.

The US movie industry has been a chief crafter of Americans' view of their history (in the post book age which established Honest Abe and other myths) - war movies in particular. Troublingly (or by design as Goebbels seemed to know) movies make compelling propaganda because they are so visceral and immersive. In fact, it seems, that people remember movie history better than real history. This makes perfect sense since humans evolved to remember their own experiences and a passage from a book creates less experiential impact than a movie (which generates an experience at least for the eyes) does.

Now, thanks to Tarantino, the Jews won World War II, and kids today who see that movie may well end up with that impression. A propaganda movie made largely with Jewish money that makes reference to the propaganda movies of a notorious anti-Jew which turns history on its head in a spinning vortex of brain strangling contradiction and irony - soon to be the new "history".

I'm pretty sure that when the Persians battled against the 300 Spartans at the hot gates they didn't bring monsters with them.

Actually, there was very little about that movie that was accurate, which is sad because the real story is way cooler. Anyway, at least the Spartans weren't flying US flags so I'm happy.

Interestingly, I don't see Red complaining about how the Persian king Xerxes was portrayed as somewhat effeminate.
