The wait is finally over!

Sounds like a high tech feminine product

I hear there gonna sell a limited version that comes with wings, called MAX iPad. :roflmao:

After trying for several weeks for someone to buy my old iMac, I actually discovered that Best Buy has a trade in program. Just packed it off to them in exchange for a Gift Card in the amount of $520, though I'm betting that I filled it out wrong and will actually get $469 over the confusion between "dual processor" and "dual core" -- as in the C2D chip...)

Anyway, I had intended to use said card towards a 13" Macbook pro for the trip I'm about to take. However, since I need a laptop now and the gift card won't be here for 14 days, I may go ahead and buy a refurb pro from apple.com for $999, use the gift card which will pay for an iPad altogether.

End result for me, traded an unused 20" iMac that was doing nothing but sitting on my desk in the way for a new "free" iPad.

THAT BEING SAID....

I'm not at all sure how I'll feel about the idea of buying what amounts to a "10 inch iPod Touch", BUT... *if* I try it out and like it, then I can wait until June, buy a 3G version of it, get on an AT&T unlimited data plan for it at $29.99 (no contract), then get rid of my iPhone (and $100+ AT&T contract) and go back to a $29.95/month T-Mobile cheap phone, which would essentially be putting $40/month back in my own pocket while still retaining the exact same level of usefulness of the iPhone PLUS gaining the usefulness of a book reader/etcetera...

Not sure the iPad has a camera though. Hmmm..

I don't think it has a camera. I'm also not sure how you could use it as a phone. Personally, I'd rather just hang on to my iPhone (if i had one) and get a netbook instead. tablets have been tried before, they've always failed. The only thing new here is that this tablet runs those mostly useless iPhone apps. And it's nice that it uses an SSD drive, but 16GB for $500 isn't exactly great bang for your buck when it comes to storage. I assume it must have some great "cloud" support out of the box.

Nah, I'm still thinking the PSP 3000 is the way to go for hand held non-phones or maybe the new Zune HD for music (I'd buy one in a snap if it had DLNA support).

Add on via USB for extra expense.

I'd want something like this to have BlueTooth and be allowed as VoIP

Zune! Better quality output than any iPod device. But, like any iPod you should get 3rd party headphones. I love my poop brown Zune 30 and would take it any day over the wife's ex-iPod. She switched to a pink 8MB Zune last year. She likes the software MUCH better than the iTunes stuff.

I wished it'd break so I could get a ZuneHD. Though it sounds like Windows Mobile 7 may have a Zune enterainment option. Being my phone and Zune work I can wait a year to see what the result is.

Sadly that was pre-release hype. No mention of a camera anywhere on it, including apple.com, so that's probably the death of the idea for me. Would have been great to Vodcast from it.

iPad Camera Connection Kit
The Camera Connection Kit gives you two ways to import photos and videos from a digital camera. The Camera Connector lets you import your photos and videos to iPad using the camera’s USB cable. Or you can use the SD Card Reader to import photos and videos directly from the camera’s SD card.

My gf has a cherry red Zune80. I really like it and she prefers it over the iPod she had before. The ZuneHD looks really slick, much nicer then the iPod - which I think is starting to look dated. Only real downside is the lack of accessories. For instance, to hook up the Zune to my Alpine deck I need to use a simple stereo headpone jack and set the deck to aux in, then press play on the Zune. If I had an iPod I could instead use the iPod adapter which would allow me to use the Alpine deck to play any song on the iPod.

Still, I'd prefer the Zune. It has built in wifi so I can sync it without having to hook it up to anything. But like I said before, I just wish it had DLNA support so that I could have it play music off my media server with 1.5TB of storage. With that, I'd hook up the Zune to a dock station and have it wired to my hifi system, allowing me to use a remote control to control the Zune. That would allow me to listen to music without turning on my PS3 and my TV AND still making use of my media server's vast storage capacity. Ahhh... One can dream. Or maybe I should just code a DLNA client myself, as the Zune has XNA support and it's pretty easy to create software for it. I fooled around with XNA/VS2008 but I just don't have the time to do anything interesting.

Yes, but we're talking two different things. I have an Eye-Fi card so I couldn't care less about CONNECTING the camera.

I want -- like all other macs (except the pro) -- the built in web camera that they SHOULD have built into it.. (as I shake my fist and scream DAMMIT! in Steve Jobs' direction)

You just need a new Ford with Sync. More seriously I have an Alpine deck . The method you describe is correct. It is a plus the iPod controls are built into the deck, even if they charge you $5000 for a stupid cable. (Okay it's not that much but it should be $2 at most)

DLNA would be a nice add-in.

There are two bigger problems, IMO. First it apparently won't multistask. You can't download in the background while you use another application. Really? This is the 21st Century. This alone makes me choose the multitasking friendly Windows 7 HP Slate.

It can't use Mac applications. It uses iPhone/iPod applications. Certainly they are numerous but for business applications wouldn't Mac compatibility be bettter. Again the Windows 7 Slate wins out for me because I can install my Windows business applications. I suppose one could just install everything into the cloud and use a browser then it doesn't matter. Office 2010 for example can run in a browser and is being tested with Mozilla for compatibility. It's a cut down version.

And in there category of 'There ought to be a law' -- connectors. Companies using their own connectors must die! This includes stereo makers, Alpine, for having a custom cable for everything. This includes media player makers - iPhone/iPod need to use their own cables. Zune needs it's own cables. If it has USB then use a USB connector, period! If it has audio and video then yellow is video, red and white are audio. And of course the Maxi iPad, really a USB adapter? How hard would a USB port or mini-USB port would be to put on there. Doing a special USB adapater only milks your customer base. There outta be a law! (My understanding is the EU is working on Cellphone requirements to limit the cable options. All will eventually use the same power adapters for example.)

Can't argue with you on cables. Not sure why we need proprietary USB cables. That's one thing I like about Motorola phones, they all (at least the ones I've seen) use standard USB cables - which btw the are adopting as a standard in the EU, which means that will probably spill over to NA.

Which amuses me greatly (but doesn't make me laugh). The whole idea back in the day was that there'd be this USB and that's the only cable you'd ever need for all your gear - but now there are more kinds of "standard" usb connector than there ever were connectors before it. And standard proliferation continues apace.

Thank god for the EU cramming standards down everyone's throats. Think of all the space we'll save when we're down to one power supply, one connector - oh the tangle of wire I have in my basement because I don't know what it cable goes with but I'm pretty sure that if I chuck it I will find out that I need it and it'll be expensive.
