That's a lowball number. The Lancet study was good and put excess deaths for the war phase at about 600,000 Iraqis. It was ridiculed by the administration instead of refuted. Lots of people are more swayed by derision than facts.

Indeed so where did they get it?
As far as I was aware the Lancet study was the most comprehensive one yet undertaken so to see this figure immediately had me raising a skeptical eyebrow.
(I know there's a research paper there for download but I don't have time to plough through that just now.)
