My 97 Honda Prelude is really pissing me off. In the cold snap a while back it blew an oil seal on the balancer shaft. So I had to replace that, along with the timing belt, water pump and all other seals and gaskets in that area. But I didn't realize that the power steering high pressure hose also developed a leak (and actually, my windshield washer hose actually completely broke from the cold in 2 sections forcing me to replace that damn thing, but that was easy and cheap). And of course the PS leak occurred directly above the PS & alternator belts, which means everything on the front end of the engine is soaked in PS fluid (I heard the stuff is flammable - one can only hope). It's even seeping out of my front grill and through the headlights. And this is all after I spent last summer changing the master brake cylinder twice and my clutch master cylinder 3 times (because the first units ALL LEAKED). Luckily the clutch slave cylinder went smoothly as did the brake caliper and oh ya, the leaky fuel injector too.

So anyway, the car needs to go back to the shop because it sounds like the timing belt auto tensioner is going. It should be under warranty because they changed it back in January with all that other crap. But still, I'm getting kinda sick of this car. My 20 year old Supra had fewer problems than this (it eventually died due to rust, the thing still ran great otherwise. But it looked so decrepit it just wasn't popular with the girls anymore even though it had a very spacious back seat  ).

I was hoping to keep the Prelude running until the fall and then I'd see what was available in terms of a replacement. But now I'm thinking I need to find something sooner. First thought is to just get something cheap and expendable. Of course, once you actually sit down and look at cheap cars you quickly start thinking that maybe cheap isn't the greatest idea.

So I don't know if I'll ever buy another Honda. And I love Toyota reliability, but they're all boring. So I'm thinking the best match for me right now is probably a Subaru product. WRX to be precise, although any 2.5L Impreza would probably do me fine. Not the most fuel efficient, but loads of fun to drive all year round. It's also a 4 door which means putting Sophia in the back isn't a major chore that only I can do properly. They also come as hatchbacks which is great for hauling stuff. I just don't know much about Subaru and how reliable they are. Turbos used to be a major point of failure, not sure if that's still true these days. And their horizontal 4 motors are a totally different beast, although from what I hear they are simpler and thus more reliable (but changing spark plugs can be a real chore). I might have to take one out for a test drive to see if I like them.

Other options I've considered: Nissan Altima, Hyundai Elantra and Kia Forte. None of those really draw me the way the WRX does, but the WRX also costs a lot more.... I hate car shopping.

I have nothing useful to add but I saw this and anyone who appreciates cars as Art / Sculpture is going to love this:

Are you going used?

The Subaru Impreza holds it's value well. It's typically towards the top in reliability and safety. Along with the AWD for those Winnipeg winters it's a great choice. I had a 2005 Saab 92x, which is a rebadged Subaru. Sold still running great at 296K miles, though it needed some head work. The Saab 92x is a bit nicer than the Subaru. A non-turbo Impreza should net you close to 31MPG Highway, driving semi-responsibly. The WRX and especially STI are great fun too. My wife has a 2009 Subaru Forrester and wouldn't give it up for much.

If you're looking at the Impreza you might want to check out the Mazda3. They're pretty comparable driving. It probably has slightly better electronic gee-gaws. The Subarus tend to lag the market a bit.

Ya, I went to the Subaru dealership yesterday. Wanted to look at a used 2009 WRX. The sales guy was pushing more towards the 2013 Imprezas though, which turned out to be cheaper due to stupid financing on their used cars. But the new Impreza's are nothing like the older ones. A 2009 Impreza is a 2.5l Boxer engine putting out around 175hp. The 2013's use a 2.0L engine pushing 150hp on a good day. Where as the WRX is close to 260hp from a 2.5L turbo. There's a 2009 WRX going for around $20K, I might want to look at that.

However, I'm now considering something completely different. The KIA Optima is looking very nice. The base model comes with a 2.4L engine pushing 200hp - same as my prelude. And for just under $22K, it comes with a lot of features. And KIA is running 0% financing on that car up to 60 months. That's a pretty good deal for a 200hp car, not much out there to compete with that. Sure it's not AWD but I can live with that. It also has top safety marks and that's now more important then ever. So I might have to stop by a KIA dealership soon.

Remember, this is Canadian pricing, it probably sounds pretty crazy to you down there. Well, it's kinda crazy up here too, but we're used to it I guess.

For 2013 Kia cut the 6 speed manual. I'd want to try a 2012 stick.

Not sure that would bother me. I'm used to 5 speeds. Interestingly, one difference between the WRX and STI is that the STI has a 6 speed, along with an additional 40hp. But in a straight up race, the WRX beats it a slim margin. Why? They say that extra shift in the STI is enough to more than negate the hp advantage. People forget how important gearing is to overall performance. My 160hp Supra would have no problem jumping ahead of 215hp Mustangs off the line. 1st gear on the Supra was pretty amazing. Even second gear was pretty spiffy. But unfortunately it ran out of steam in 3rd and the Mustangs would catch up and take over. That's why god gave us Turbos I guess.

I'm starting to rethink my desire for a WRX. I've been reading that the boxer engines suffer from spun bearings and other piston related issues. Not sure how true that is, but the WRX forums are full of it. Makes me nervous, but I suppose all cars have their problems.

What about something like a Nissan Skyline 370GT KV36? Four doors, nice looking, quite a bit of grunt for a N/A 6 and RWD just for fun. Not sure if they are available in Canada, I know I've seen a few on the street downunder.

We do get some right hand drive Skylines, but the older models. Back from when there was a Skyline and a 300ZX from Nissan. We never saw a Skyline sold in North America, those were all JDM, but people import them because they were pretty nice and rare. What you call the Skyline 370GT is sold under the Infiniti line as the G37 coupe and G37 sedan - and really is just a 370z with an Infiniti badge. Just after my wife got pregnant I was looking at a used G35 coupe which I thought would make a great replacement for the Prelude. My wife looked at it and reminded me we're having a baby. That put an end to that! My cousin however has a G37x (awd), which he's pretty happy with.

Btw, there's a guy who lives around where I live with a red GT-R. Nice, but not my favorite. Funny thing, I live down the street from a tennis club. Must be a big shot tennis club, in the summer time I see a white Murcielago parked there all the time. Makes the Mercedes and Porsches next to it look like junk. There's also a guy who drives the Canadian built Bricklin that lives around here.

Kinda reminds me of the DeLorean that was always parked by my parents place. Didn't have the flex capacitor option though.

I really must post a video of my car giving it the beans :D
