Train derails and wrecks Quebec town

I don't understand why they need to build rail lines through towns and cities. The main trans-canada rail line is less than 100 meters from my front door here. It cuts through the city and the number of trains that pass through here are quite high. It should be routed around the city.

I think that's kind of like asking why rivers run through cities. The rail rights of way are generally quite old and while some of them may have once been on the outskirts of towns, towns grow. It also must be recognized that rail is an important way of getting things to places and it's more efficient to bring good right into town on rail and then distribute them from there rather than bring them to depot merely close to town.

A better question might be why would anyone think it was a good idea to park crude oil tankers up a hill with the town at the bottom of the hill.

A good idea would be to build a oil pipeline rather than ship oil by train, unless your Obama, then you want all oil shipped on your buddy Warren Buffett's railroad.

Police: Evidence criminal act may have led to Canada train crash

Suspicious:

Train air brakes, and truck air brakes both require air pressure to release, the fail mode, no air pressure means the brakes don't release

crude oil doesn't explode, it burns, and it requires an very hot initiating fire to get the crude hot enough to burn

Crude Oil doesn't explode, natural gas explodes, you have to mix crude oil with something else to get an explosion

example: a Molotov doesn't explode, its just burns very hot
