There's sadly a lot of this sort of thing going on. Some months back I was speaking to a Polish worker who was in the Job Centre looking for new work, he'd got an interview but wasn't sure about where in the city it was, so I took him to the place myself as I'd finished for the day. He described how he, his friend who was with him and over a dozen others had been tricked into coming over here to sell perfume on a 100% commission basis. The company in question had crammed them all into a pokey 3 bed house and contrary to what the company had told them about us Brits buying any old tat if you just ask them to, were now collectively starving and had no way of getting back.

So upon hearing this I got mightily pissed and then pointed them to the civic centre and told them that they could apply for state benefits to help them keep going in the mean time.

It might not be slavery in the technical sense, but it certainly came damned close for my taste.
