A U.S. military task force has discovered that part of a $2.16 billion transportation contract was diverted through a murky network of subcontractors and into the hands of a group of Afghan power-brokers, criminals and Taliban insurgents, according to a source with knowledge of the investigation.

I've been seeing that story around but I haven't read it yet. I presume this is regular old corruption so the cost is on top of the cost of directly paying the Taliban not to attack trucks. Throw in the US soldiers protecting the poppy fields and it looks like precisely the wrong kinds of people are doing very well out of this little operation. Tax money well spent and don't you all feel safer.

Meanwhile both sides in the debt ceiling farce are happy to continue this way, whilst blaming each other for holding the country to ransom.
