UK experiences the coldest December on record

http://ibnlive.in.com/news/uk-experienc ... 848-2.html

London: Heavy snowfall on Saturday brought large parts of Britain to a standstill by grounding flights and, blocking roads and rail networks in what is considered to be the coldest December on record.

Heathrow Airport cancelled all flights between 10 am and 5 pm on Saturday, with further problems at Gatwick and in Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

The announcement came after overnight blizzards and plummeting temperatures buckled a huge chunk of the nation's road and rail links on the busiest weekend for travel and shopping before Christmas.

Hundreds of drivers were trapped on motorways overnight. The North-West was hit with deluges of up to 10 inches of snow while parts of the south were also blanketed overnight. Blizzards are expected in parts of the South-East

and Midlands on Saturday.

London was under a thick blanket of snow today while hundreds of motorists were stranded on the motorway in Greater Manchester as reported by the police.

Parts of the south were also blanketed by snow overnight, with the blizzards predicted to dump as much as a foot of snow on parts of the South East and the Midlands.

Temperatures dropped as low as minus 13 C in Chesham, Buckinghamshire and minus 11 C in Gatwick.

The overall warming of the earth's northern half could result in cold winters. The shrinking of sea-ice in the eastern Arctic causes some regional heating of the lower levels of air – which may lead to strong anomalies in atmospheric airstreams, triggering an overall cooling of the northern continents, a study recently published in the Journal of Geophysical Research shows. LINK

On the surface it sounds reactive since last year and this year are cold. However, the paper this is based on was submitted for publishment in Nov of 2009, before the cooling occurred.

Though, I wouldn't call it a complete success yet. Last year we saw a cold snap in Nov and Dec in Europe. Followed by some of the warmest Jan and Feb temps ever. It'll be interesting to see if that behavior repeats itself. And their cycle seems to follow the North Atlantic Oscillation so how these two are, or aren't interrelated are an item still to be worked out. It'll be interesting to see if, or if not, this paper's predictive qualities come to be.

A NASA scientist is now saying the the effect of the sun is the primary cause of heating/cooling trends and we should expect to entire the next ice age.

"Global Warming" is dead. Some time before 2020 you will see documentaries about how it was the biggest scam in human history (which I have been saying since day one).

A? 1? Look at it this way if Physicsts were stopping their work for the "1" person that's proven perpetual motion is real would we call out that Einstein is now proven all wrong? Of course not. Science builds upon research. What measures over the last 150+ years along with physical feature (ice loss) over the same timeframe is showing is we're in a warming period.

Will the planet return to an ice age? Most likely, heck even most definitely. Is there indications of this now? I wouldn't take 1 month of cooler temps to be proof positive of anything (and it's not even been that long.) Don't forget there is a Southern hemisphere too. They aren't showing the cooling the Northern has and some cities have hit record highs too. Simply, before you're hopping up and down about the cooling trend the planet's on I'd give it more than 2 weeks; try a couple years.

Do you not remember last winter and the one before that?

(2009)Anti-climactic irony – Copenhagen Climate Conference finale hit with snow and cold

In 2010 this conference is being held in Cancun, gee I wonder why?

We have had 2 extremely cold winters and are entering a 3rd. This is only December, I can only imagine what it will be like in February. Hardly 2 weeks, going on 3 years at least.

Like you give us Florida I can give you Minnesota. Last winter was warmer than average. Yes we had a couple of cold weeks. Immediately afterwards we had a warmer period with temps higher than average (compared to the cold temps lower than average) and more days overall above average. This resulted in a nearly unprecidented snowless March, not because there wasn't moisture, it was because it came in rain. It was so warm the snow melted and winter entertainement venues lost revenue. So no 'we' didn't have an extremely cold winter here.

Europe too, if memory serves, a very cold Nov and Dec of 2009 then 2010 resulted in one of the warmest Jan and Febs on record.

Vancouver Olympics 2010 and the struggle to keep the ski hills from melting. Yup. I remember that.

This reminds me of late jan 2010. The sporting event is the John Beargrese Dogsled competition. Temps hit the 30s and dogs had to be pulled out due to heat exhaustion. Avg highs in Duluth are 17. The lows didnt reach that. To top it off they didnt have snow but freezing rain.

And as another reminder to Red, when you posed it's cold in Florida therefore Global Cooling is happening in Jan of 2010 central MN was in a heat wave. We were running double digit above average temperatures.

Iceland had a heatwave this year.
They seem to have been having several of those in the last few years.

Yes but I betcha all those weather stations have recently been moved next to AC units.

Aherm.
