To say "US backed" and "opposition" is probably almost redundant because eve if they don't start out that way it isn't long before someone comes along offering money and assistance, however, Boris Nemtsov was hardly a threat(at least alive he wasn't) to Vladimir Putin.
Yesterday he was gunned down in the street quite publicly (instead of being character assassinated, or having an accident or committing suicide or the usual ways of removing people quietly) suggesting that the killers either lack the sophistication of state actors or simply WANT the assassination to be as obvious and theatrical as possible.
Mr. Glasnost is suspicious that it may be a "provocation".
