US Homeland Security now tracking medical records of Canadians

Sounds more like they have access to our police files, not medical files. But still, that's news to me but it doesn't surprise me at all.

Don't worry. DHS can access your medical records IF they are on a server in the US. We ask them to exempt our medical records from the "US can see anything on a US server" law but there is no indication that they won't. They have the legal right.
Now, that only applies to medical records stored in the US, which is, I believe, the case in BC which contracts with Maximus since 2004. This means that the records are available to certain agencies of the US government under section 215 of the USA PATRIOT act. In 2005 we lost the right to annul that contract on the grounds that it does not protect Canadian privacy of medical records. In 2007 the appeal was rejected.
I went for a routine procedure not to long ago and was asked to sign a release that should an emergency happen then my records could be released to a firm that may be a US firm (I can't remember the rationale but found it disturbing) which I declined with firmly pressed in large print black ball-point.

If you live in BC, at least, yes - the US has access to your medical records.
 
You'd think those records would be encrypted. But then, I've never actually worked anywhere where user data has been encrypted. I hear banks and the DoD are the only ones that take that seriously.

Doesn't matter. They have to hand over the information if they are asked for it.
 
Here's another invasion of privacy attempt but this time by the Canadian Government. Don't worry, Americans, you aren't left out. You already have this under the NSA and warrantless wire taps.
