VW says back our diesels VW is the only real company that users diesels in cars in the USA. (Yes Audi too but they're the same company.)
Perhaps VW is wanting one final thrust before the competition falls?
Dodge, Ford, and GM all have Diesel trucks. Dodge announced a 'light' 3.0L diesel. First for the RAM pickups then for Jeeps. GM announced a Chevy Cruise Diesel, which appears to be faster and better MPG than the Jetta. And Nissan is going to be adding a Cummings diesel to compete with Dodge, Ford, GM trucks. ... Diesel USA in 2014-2016 looks to be more competitive.
Though in that non-diesel line the 2014 Mazda 3 w/ 189hp 40MPG skyactiv engine looks interesting. The reliability is likely better than VW. And in MN diesel costs me 10-15% more than gas, so it'd be about equal per mile to a Jetta.
