Wanna buy a satellite?

McDeath, obviously you have never tried to use satellite based Internet. It is pitiful. Three times the monthly cost, for half the speed. Put on top of that, you have to buy the damn expensive equipment. But they will set you up for only $400 to $500 to get the basic .75 megabit speed, and only cut you down to .50 when they get busy.

But on the other hand, who is going to pay for the computers those po folks need?

I'm presuming it beats "no internet".

For one thing "they" won't be trying to make a profit so the end user prices will be much lower, and "they" are bearing the original equipment cost and launch cost but buying a platform at liquidation price.
Further, not every user would need their own uplink. One uplink could be shared with a whole community and the satellite could push more data down fewer channels instead of having to split bandwidth across so many individual endpoints.

The trickier question is electricity. There are already mobile low power machines that are $400 new and much less used. The One Laptop Per Child machine is under $200 though not yet under the $100 that they were aiming for, and India is developing a $35 wireless tablet for their rural poor. This is a government of India initiative and they stand a chance of getting there if they manage to cut out the two biggest costs which are when the wholesaler sells it to the retailer and then the retailer sells it to the buyer. Where I work a $40 BOM regularly turns into $200 retail price.

If they name their operation the 'Archangel Network' I'd send them money today. :D

Would it really be today? Or would it be an alternate today that then subsequently ceased to exit? Man, that's not convoluted at all.
