We're in trouble:

In other words, we've got five years to make a dramatic shift in the sorts of power plants we're building, or there's no way we're going to limit climate change to stated goals. It's also worth noting that the IEA ran a "New Policies" scenario that takes into account all current pledges by national governments. It resulted in much higher emissions and a likely temperature rise of 3.5°C. Still, if the New Policies targets aren't implemented, then the IEA estimates that we would be on track for a rise of 6°C.

Interesting but will be dismissed on various counts.
i.e.
"There is no such thing as climate change."
then:
"OK there is but it's entirely natural."
in other words:
"Man made emissions have no bearing whatsoever on climate so don't just keep on pumping but go a step further and ramp it the hell up and let's see how much pollution this baby can take!"

Or since the Little Ice Age, the world has been warming 1C-1.5C each century. Now how did CO2 contribute to the Middle Ages Warming Period again?

Exactly, more crisis fear mongering from those who want to tax us even more. I'm waiting on the Progressives to go impress the world's number one polluter to cut back, China.

Wonder where all those higher emissions are coming from??

which is why I have considered it a waste of time to try and "convince" the non-thinkers on this topic.
The only thing we can do is stop putting money into the oil companies.

our neighbors who either don't care about the planet or are simply ignorant will only begin to care when it becomes SO expensive for them to buy gas, heat their homes, etc...that if they see others who have chosen a different path getting by much better that will spur them on.

I know it is generally thought that only changing LARGE policies can succeed, but I have no trust in that solution. because it simply will never happen. People are simply too stupid and too selfish for that.

only people like my friend working on his electric car conversion project will make any difference. And there ARE people who have been doing things like that all over the planet...they just don't get much exposure because news like that is not sexy.

China's carbon emissions are America's carbon emissions. China is America's factory and if US can claim the economic output of Chinese factories as part of its own GDP then the US has a responsibility for emissions too. The US could simply demand certain energy standards for Chinese factories - but it would cost American corporations money so they are happy to let china run as dirty but as cheaply as they can.

Both China and India have massive populations that want to live like Americans. It requires ludicrous amounts of energy to live like an American and if Americans could figure out a way to live like that for less energy (still possible) it would be a great boon to share that technology with the world - but where is the profit in that?

India and China, however, are quite aware of the impossibility of satisfying their demands (and our demands on them) with conventional power and both are looking at large scale compact alternatives such as Thorium reactors.

Get your life in order people. Only 50 days left.

When they say "recent theory" they mean at least ten years old, no? We've talked about that here on Whyzzat before.

(ah, I now see the copyright date on the article itself)

So far, then, so good. 50 days left and we have 7 billion people so we have lots of spares. However, we are living near the edge of the current carrying capacity and it only takes 40 days without food to become dead - fewer if you are already food stressed. They die quicker if they start fighting over what little there is. Large numbers of people can die off quite rapidly. It just hasn't quite happened yet but the food supplies have been tightening (compounded by speculation) in the last few years and people around the world are getting grumpier.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration produced this video showing the unique nature of the modern spike in the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide.
