Not the private sector.

Obama Was Right: The Government Invented the Internet

Earlier this month, President Obama argued that wealthy business people owe some of their success to the government’s investment in education and basic infrastructure. He cited roads, bridges, and schools. Then he singled out the most clear-cut example of how government investment can spark huge business opportunities: the Internet.

“The Internet didn’t get invented on its own,” Obama said. “Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.”

And then the WSJ decided to make a fool of itself....

Suddenly, though, the government’s role in the Internet’s creation is being cast into doubt. “It’s an urban legend that the government launched the Internet,” Gordon Crovitz, the former publisher of the Wall Street Journal, argued Monday in a widely linked Journal op-ed. Instead, Crovitz believes that “full credit” for the Internet’s creation ought to go to Xerox, whose Silicon Valley research facility, Xerox PARC, created the Ethernet networking standard as well as the first graphical computer (famously the inspiration for Apple’s Mac). According to Crovitz, not only did the government not create the Internet, it slowed its arrival—that researchers were hassled by “bureaucrats” who stymied the network’s success.
Yes, he said "full credit". If that was Stephen Colbert it would have been one hell of a joke, but in the WSJ? Really?

I was going to guess Bill Clinton as I assumed that an interner is something that does something to interns ... though I don't know what exactly.

Yes. I haven't figured out how to edit a thread title yet. If Red was around I'm sure he'd help out, but oh well. :(

the internet is another one of those great lots-O-people involved projects.

having worked on multimillion dollar films/series so I find all this very normal.

and humans more than likely work on these multipeople projects. that's how we got to the Moon.

i was one of 17 "team leaders", each "team " consisted of 20 to 30 troops, (depending on installation size they routinely did). my personal average was 27. thats already a lot of "didnt do it yourself" right there.

The gubmint done it - and I bet it cost them a third of what it would have cost to contract out.

I guess Mitt served for the US Army between 2001 and 2006. Afterall their slogan was
"Army of One"

actually they did hire contractors to finish it and it was closer to one fourth... i was only a spec 4 at the time and i got paid about 1800 per month... the contactors got 5600....

Obama said:
“The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.”

A great number of scientific and engineering breakthroughs have happened as a result of “government research,” primarily military research, not just the Internet but nuclear power, GPS systems, jet aircraft, and many more. But Obama is sorely mistaken in claiming that the Internet was created “so that all the companies could make money” off it. Actually, the military built ARPANet to facilitate defense-related research and to strengthen military command-and-control capabilities. It was most definitely not created “so that all the companies could make money,” as a very early ARPANet handbook explained:

"It is considered illegal to use the ARPANet for anything which is not in direct support of Government business….Sending electronic mail over the ARPANet for commercial profit or political purposes is both anti-social and illegal."
Similar facts undermine other aspects of Obama’s and Warren’s emotional sloganering. Prior to 1956, the vast majority of roads and highways and rail lines in the United States were built either privately, or by local communities, or by states. It was not until the building of the Interstate Highway System by Eisenhower in 1956 that the federal government became deeply involved in building the interstate highway system for defense purposes.

@Metalman,

You are right on the fine details. The internet wasn't built 'so businesses can make money'.

However, the internet was opened up to businesses in such a way that it's an equal playing field for those businesses to use and make money if they so choose. Had we followed the media and telecomm company's desire they would have been given toll master keys to the internet. They alone would have had the power to close off Amazon from the network or allow Amazon through. Clearly a BAD plan for the 'information highway'. Like all roadways the internet should be open equally to all comers.

...
Though to go 'interesting' in the Mitt Romney direction it appears (if we read the exact words as you do above) he believes all businesses strived on their own but all atheltes had community assistance.

But Obama is sorely mistaken in claiming that the Internet was created “so that all the companies could make money” off it.

It was Al Gore who took the lead on creating the legeslation that turned the Internet into the business friendly space it is today.

Sorry - just got around to reading this thread. Do you want it changed?

Well, I meant it to say "Internet" instead of "Interner". I'm not too concerned about it, but if you're looking for something to do.... :D
