While looking more deeply into Starsuckers (see Starsuckers thread for trailer of the documentary) I found this on the Guardian.
Fake News.
Fake news can spread far and fast so just because a story is dumb doesn't actually mean it happened. Made up stories are already spread by the news. Not to mention, of course, that all the news that's fit to print/air IS dumb news. Real news doesn't make the broadcast because it's complicated and boring - and generally too important to let the rabble discuss and think about it.
