Winnipeg has offered millions to build an amusement park for Christ. It'll be a 'community' skate park but run by the churches. The group has already laid out their plans "Sharing the person of Christ with every young person within our target group in Canada (5.4 million youth). This will require the development of new strategies, as well as strengthening existing efforts."

Not to mention this is in a large Native population area. The aborignal community is seeing this plan as recycling religion to assimilate and destroy their own community.

If a church wants to build a skate park for Christ then cool. The government should not be funding efforts that are meant to build the believers.

Although the article doesn't say it, this is Harper's work at play. He's been doing all he can to gain the support of the religious groups. Correction, Christian groups. I somehow doubt a muslim youth center would get much funding.

As for the area itself, it's a dump. Mostly natives and the poorest part of Winnipeg with round the clock displays of drunkenness. I play hockey within walking distance of that place and a buddy owns a greasy spoon just North from where that photo was taken. Surprisingly he doesn't get robbed that often, but he also knows the right people to give free burgers to. heh, anyway, that place does need development and a youth center is a great idea. But if they're gonna be pushing religious views on the kids then it's overall impact may be far less then what the area needs.

EDIT: I also wouldn't be surprised if Shindico develops the land. The mayor is well connected with this developer and we've already seen some shady deals between the two.

LAST EDIT: I also noticed the article said nothing about the views of the natives that live there. That should be a key part of this debate. If they're left out of this then again I'd say they will probably learn to hate the center rather then embrace it.
